Art Deco opal diamond ring in platinum (950 thousandths). Antique daisy-shaped ring, centered on a large cabochon-cut opal set in a clasp, surrounded by twelve old-cut diamonds. The opal features a play of violet, blue and green with a hint of orange. The ring's basket is delicately worked, decorated with volutes. Art Deco period ring, circa 1930, France. Dog-head hallmark and goldsmith's hallmark (French State hallmark for platinum). Finger size: 51 UE or 5.75 US (can be cut to size) Bezel size: 18 x 14 mm  Opal weight: 1.03 carat Total estimated diamond weight: 0.48 carat Condition: chips, scratches from use Weight : 8,18 gr Gemology and beliefs : There are several types of opal: noble opals and common opals. Noble opals, like this one, have a play of color due to light. They are composed of tiny, aligned siliceous spheres of the same diameter. As the light falls on the stone, and depending on the angle from which it is viewed, a play of light dances across the opal's surface. Common opal, on the other hand, has no play of light; its spherules are disordered and of different diameters. Light will only give it a milky appearance. In the collective imagination, opal is said to have the ability to make people invisible. Hence its designation as "Patronus furum" (patron saint of thieves) in the late Middle Ages.

Returns:
